Create an Eco Printed Masterpiece

5-Day Studio Class with Sue Spargo and Mary DeLano

Tickets for this Event are Sold Out

Dye, Stitch, Create!

Enjoy a collaboration between Sue Spargo and Mary DeLano, where we play with color and images from nature! Spend the first day learning the eco printing process with Mary, and create a palette of textiles consisting of naturally dyed and un-dyed wools, linen, cotton and silk.
For the next four days, create four mini blocks inspired by Sue's Seedpods quilt using your eco printed materials. Sue will guide you through the creative process of designing and embellishing your blocks, as you combine the art of nature and folk-art to create something truly one of a kind!

In this class, you will:
  • Learn how fabrics are prepared for the dyeing process, and what plants produce the best results when eco printing
  • Gather leaves and flowers, and design your own eco prints before completing the dyeing process
  • Get inspired by Sue's Seedpods quilt, along with many other projects created using eco printed fabrics
  • Create four mini blocks through applique, layering and embellishment using your eco printed materials and other naturally dyed threads and fibers

Meet Mary!

Mary DeLano is a fiber artist who enjoys exploring natural dyes and eco printing. Her home on a lake in Maine gives her a beautiful palate of plants to inspire her prints. She strongly believes that experimentation and observation are key to developing skills in this area and frequently creates sample studies to find pleasing combinations of plants and colors. Mary teaches in many venues in New England, including at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society’s garden at Elm Bank. In addition to natural dyeing and eco printing, Mary enjoys embellishing her eco prints with embroidery and working natural dye samples into larger collages. You can see her work at marydelanofiberart.com.

Each class registration will receive an Eco Printing Starter Kit that includes approximately 2 yards of assorted wool, linen, silk and cotton fabrics for eco printing.

  • Freezer paper
  • Applique pins
  • Chalk pencil
  • Scissors
  • Needles for applique and embellishment
  • Ellana wool and Efina cotton threads for applique
  • Assortment of wool and cotton fabrics (eco prints or soft tones)
  • Embellishment threads in a variety of weights and fibers (bring any natural dyed threads if you have them!)

Naturally dyed wools, fabrics, threads and additional materials will be available for purchase during class.
